In short
The original Omegle shut down on 8 November 2023. Its founder closed it after 14 years: moderating anonymous live video, plus the lawsuits around that design, had outgrown a one-person site. In 2026 the old domain changed hands. By early November 2026 it was loading a new web app, not the chat people remember. OmegleChat.love is a separate free browser room — text, voice, or video — and it is not that company.
For fourteen years, omegle.com was the page you opened when you wanted a stranger and nothing else: no profile, no app, one person, then Next. On 8 November 2023 that room was gone. A farewell letter stood in its place. Through 2026 the address started moving again, first as a teaser, then as a new site wearing the old name. This page is what actually happened, and where to talk to someone if that is still what you came for.
Omegle shut down on 8 November 2023
There was no long countdown. The chat box disappeared and a letter from founder Leif K-Brooks went up, ending with the Omegle logo drawn on a gravestone. He had started the site in March 2009, at 18. At its busiest it was a huge audience run by almost no staff. The letter did not pretend the product was fine. He wrote that keeping it going was no longer sustainable, financially or personally, because the work of fighting misuse had swallowed the operation. Omegle was 14 years old. For a long stretch after that, the domain showed the goodbye and not a queue.
Why Omegle closed
It was not one bad day. Three pressures arrived together.
Lawsuits
The heaviest public case was brought by a woman who said she had been matched, as a child, with an adult who exploited her. Courts allowed product-design claims to proceed, which mattered: random-chat sites had long leaned on a legal shield that treated them as pipes, not as the design of the room. The case settled in early November 2023. The farewell letter followed within days. A one-owner company could read that as a simple warning. Every future match carried the risk of a courtroom.
Moderation
The product paired anonymous strangers on camera, instantly, at a scale one person could not watch. That was the appeal and the failure mode. No account means little to attach a ban to. Video means the harm happens live, not in a text log you can review later. Omegle did run filters and human review, and it did work with law enforcement. The volume did not shrink to something a tiny team could hold. By 2023, laws such as the UK Online Safety Act were being written with rooms like this in mind.
Money
Omegle was free and ad-supported. There was no subscription large enough to fund a moderation department and a legal department at the same time. The founder described the fight against misuse as a barrage he could no longer absorb. The site did not run out of people who wanted to talk. It ran out of a way to pay for the damage that way of talking created.
Who has omegle.com now?
The original operator is not the story of the address in 2026.
What changed in 2026
Reporting in May 2026 said the public registration record for omegle.com had been updated, listing RC Tech America Inc., a Delaware company, with the name held at the registrar Gandi. Around then the farewell letter gave way to a short teaser: a new logo and the line that Omegle was launching soon. No team page, no date, no safety notes came with that line.
Does “launching soon” mean Omegle is back?
No, not the service people remember. The founder shut that down on purpose and has not said he is involved in a revival. By 5 November 2026, omegle.com was no longer only a teaser: the address served a web application, with scripts hosted on cdn.omegle.com. That is a new product under a famous sign. It has its own owners, its own rules, and a safety record that starts at zero. Judge it by what it actually ships. We are not affiliated with it, and this page is not a login for it.
The name has also been borrowed, since 2023, by a crowd of lookalike sites. A familiar word in the address bar is not the old Omegle.
Where did Omegle’s users go?
People did not stop wanting a stranger on short notice. They scattered.
The scatter
Some went to older random-video sites. Many tried the “new Omegle” pages that appeared within weeks of the shutdown. A few of those run real report tools. Others are the same misuse problem with a different logo. None of them inherited Omegle’s code, staff, or operator. A comparison of the names people still line up — OmeTV, Monkey, Chatroulette — is on this alternatives page. Searches for Omegla are the same kind of request under another name. That note is on Omegla chat.
What people wanted to keep
Under the nostalgia, the useful part was specific. One click. No account. No friend list. A live person you did not pick from a grid. A replacement has to keep that speed, and it has to add the two things the old site could not fund enough of: moderation you can see, and a report button that actually skips the person.
What to open instead
We run OmegleChat, so this section is our own product, not a neutral ranking. You can check every line on the home page.
OmegleChat runs in the browser. It is free to start. There is no app to install and no account before the first hello. You are a guest. You pick the format, then you are in a private 1-to-1. Next, block, and report stay on the session. Adults only.
If you want video
Video is the closest feeling to classic Omegle: camera on, one person, skip when it is not a fit. The button on the home page is Start video chat.
If you would rather type
Text is its own queue. The camera stays off. It is the lower-pressure way in, and it does not borrow leftovers from the video line.
Voice, which Omegle did not offer
Voice is microphone only. It is for when text feels slow and a camera feels like too much.
| Mode | Best for | Camera | Sign-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video | Face to face, one to one | On | Not required |
| Text | Type, camera off | Off | Not required |
| Voice | Talk, no camera | Off | Not required |
Omezy is our orange sister brand, with interest matching, on its own site. The short introduction is about Omezy. Shorter notes on the search phrases themselves are in the Omegle blog post.
Start on OmegleChat
Free Omegle-style chat in the browser. Text, voice, or video. No signup. Adults only. Not the old Omegle.

The room you pick does not change the habits.
- Do not share your name, school, workplace, or social accounts with a stranger.
- Assume a camera can be recorded. We do not promise the other person will not take a screenshot.
- Use report instead of arguing. Then leave.
- If a chat turns strange, Next is one tap. The next person is the exit.
- These rooms are for adults. If you are under 18, this corner of the internet is not built for you.

Questions people ask
When did Omegle shut down?
On 8 November 2023, after about 14 years. The chat was replaced by a farewell letter from Leif K-Brooks. That letter stayed on the domain until the address started changing again in 2026.
Why did Omegle shut down?
Lawsuit pressure, including a case about a child matched with an exploitative adult that settled just before the closure; the unsolved cost of moderating anonymous live video; and a founder who said the fight was no longer sustainable.
Is Omegle coming back?
The original service is not. The domain showed a “launching soon” teaser after a reported ownership change in May 2026. By 5 November 2026 the same address was serving a new web app. Whatever that app is, it is not the 2009–2023 Omegle, and its founder has not announced that he runs it.
What should I use instead?
If you want the old rhythm — one stranger, in the browser, then Next — start on OmegleChat. Video if you want a face. Text if you want the camera off. Voice if you want to talk without showing the room. None of those modes is the old Omegle. That site ended in 2023.
